Dr. Prasanta Kumar Hota
(Associate Professor)

Dr. Prasanta Kumar Hota received his BSc Chemistry (Honours), MSc Chemistry and MPhil Chemistry from Sambalpur University Odisha. He received two gold medals from Sambalpur University for securing rank 1 position in his undergraduate and postgraduate studies. In MPhil, Dr Hota did his research on the fluorescence probe properties of various synthetic cyanine dyes under the supervision of Professor Pradipta Kumar Behera. He qualified the NET-JRF (CSIR-UGC) and joined the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay for his PhD under the supervision of Professor Anil K. Singh, where he worked on the synthesis, photochemistry and photobiology of retinoids and retinal bound photoreceptor, bacteriorhodopsin. He moved to Case Western Reserve University, USA (2006-2011) for his 1st postdoctoral research with Professor Matthias Buck, where he worked on the receptor protein-protein interactions (transmembrane proteins: plexins, semaphorins and Rho GTPases). He then joined McMaster University, Canada (2012-2013) for his 2nd postdoctoral research with Professor Richard M. Epand, where he worked on the Diacylglycerol kinases-lipid interaction. He is the recipient of American Heart Association research award in 2008-2010. In 2013, he joined H. N. B. Garhwal University as an Assistant Professor and worked there for a period of eleven years and eight months (2013-2025). In 2025, he joined the University of Delhi as an Associate Professor.
Dr Hota’s research is focused on (1) Synthesis of biologically active heterocyclic molecules and to understand the receptor protein-drugs interaction (anti-oxidant, anti-inflammation, anti-microbial properties) (2) Photochemistry of retinoids and stilbenoids like heterocyclic conjugated molecules (3) Development of fluorescent donor-acceptor conjugated organic molecules for various biological and electronics applications (fluorescence probe, sensor, NLO and OLED, cell imaging applications)
